Calandri finalist at BCFNYES!

Abstract
"Good for bees, good for humanity" project, by Niccolò Calandri, a DEIB PhD student, and Riccardo Balzaretti, of the Insubria University, is among the finalist projects of 2016 BCFN YES!.
The BCFN YES! Research Grant Competition encourages research ideas that might be considered ground-breaking with potential to be of high impact for the sustainability of the agri-food system.
Human life – and the world as a whole – would be much different if bees did not exist. Bees are responsible for the pollination of about a sixth of flowering plants and more than 400 different agricultural types of crops. Moreover, honeybees contribute to produce approximately a third of what we usually eat. In the last decades bees are dying faster and faster: last year more than 53% of bees have died in Europe and about 90% in US. We are proposing a research project focused on helping of bees: with the study of the bee lives and the causes of their disappearance, we will be able to predict/prevent their death due to pathogens/chemicals and to give our support the apiculture. The project’s aim is to design an innovative electronic monitoring system for beehive: Hive-Tech. Sharing information among everyone wants to help bees: researchers, beekeepers and consumers as well. This system analyses the parameters of bee lives, from air quality, light spectrum and thermal imaging. This system allows people to help bees just buying the honey production from the monitored beehives, which will contribute to the installation of new systems: adopt an Hive-Tech!
