Abstract

On November 8th, 2023 at 6.30 pm Francesco Pierri and Carlo Alberto Bono will give the next talk of the series AI Seminars on "AI and Social Media".

Francesco Pierri will give a talk on "LLMs in the age of misinformation (or misinformation in the age of LLMs)".

The rise of novel generative AI has sparked widespread excitement and significant concerns worldwide. These technologies, such as OpenAI's GPT-3 and Midjourney, have demonstrated unprecedented capabilities in generating human-like text and realistic pictures and videos. In this talk, we overview the potential detrimental effects of generative AI when employed to create sophisticated disinformation campaigns, spread misinformation as well as deliver targeted attacks to individuals and organizations.

Carlo Alberto Bono will give a talk entitled "Supporting large-scale emergency management using social media data".

Natural and anthropogenic emergencies have a high potential of disrupting social order. During the onset of an emergency, situational awareness has the highest value for mitigating consequences. In these scenarios, social media can complement awareness gained from the field, given its ubiquitous and real-time nature, helping to derive a full picture of complex situations. Several challenges are linked to the nature of social media data, including velocity, noise, multi-modality and unpredictability. In this seminar, recent approaches to overcome these challenges will be presented and discussed, with examples taken from real-world events.
