Guido Tartara was born in La Spezia, Italy, on March 27th, 1938. He received the Dr.Ing. degree in Electrical Engineering and the "Libera Docenza" in Electrical Communications from the Politecnico di Milano in 1961 and 1971, respectively. Following his military service, he joined the Department of Electrical Engineering, Politecnico di Milano, in 1964. During the period 1967-1968 he was on leave at the University of California, Los Angeles, and then he joined the Faculty of the Politecnico di Milano, where he became Professor of Communication Systems in 1975. His research interests cover various aspects of communication system theory, digital transmission, and radio communication systems. He has been the chairman of the Committee for the Master Degree in Telecommunication Engineering. He has been also the Director of the Space Telecommunications Research Center of CNR (National Research Council) at the Politecnico di Milano, a member of the "Senato Accademico" at the Politecnico di Milano, and VicePresident of AEI (Electrical Enginering Association, Italy). He is author of various books on communication systems theory and on radio communication systems. Awards: Award for the best paper at the 14th Convegno Internazionale delle Comunicazioni, Genova, 1966; AEI (Italian Electrical and Electronic Society) Prize for the papers published in Alta Frequenza, 1976; AEI Prize for research achievements, 1989; International "Colombo" Award in Communication Science, City of Genova, 1989. He is a member of Istituto Lombardo Accademia di Scienze e Lettere.
