Marco Masseroli received the Laurea degree in Electronic Engineering in 1990 from Politecnico di Milano, and the PhD degree in Biomedical Engineering in 1996 from Universidad de Granada, Spain. He is Associate Professor at the Dipartimento di Elettronica e Informazione of Politecnico di Milano, and lecturer of the courses "Bioinformatics and Computational Biology" and "ICT for Health Care" for the Master of Science in Computer Science and Engineering and in Biomedical Engineering. He is associate editor of IEEE-Transactions on Information Technologies in Biomedicine, and serves regularly as reviewer for several international scientific journals. He carried out research activity in the application of Information Technology to the medical and biological sciences in several Italian and international research centres, including the Ospedale San Raffaele of Milan, Istituto di Ricerche Farmacologiche "Mario Negri", Dipartimento di Bioingegneria of Politecnico di Milano, European Institute of Oncology, Nuclear Medicine Department of the Molecular Graphics Suite of the School of Chemistry of University of Bath - UK, and Department of Biomedical Engineering of The Cleveland Clinic Foundation in Cleveland, OH - USA. He has been Visiting Professor at the Departamento de Anatomía Patológica, Facultad de Medicina of the Universidad de Granada - Spain, and Visiting Faculty at the Cognitive Science Branch of the National Library of Medicine, National Institute of Health, Bethesda - USA. He is the author of more than 200 peer-reviewed papers on international journals and conference proceedings in the field of Bioinformatics, Medical Informatics and bioimage processing. At present his research interests are in the area of Bioinformatics and Medical Informatics, focused on distributed Internet technologies, genomic databanks, controlled vocabularies and bio-ontologies to effectively retrieve, query and share heterogeneous genomic and biomedical information, and on their management, analysis and semantic integration with patient clinical and high-throughput genetic data.
