Guido Maier received his Laurea degree in Electronics (1995) and his Ph.D. in Telecommunications (2000) at Politecnico di Milano (Italy). He was at the research consortium CoreCom, Italy (1995–2006). In 2006 he joined the Department of Electronics, Information and Bioengineering (DEIB) at PoliMi as Assistant Professor (Associate Professor since 2015). He teaches “Fundamentals of Internet” (undergraduate) and "Network Automation" (master). He keeps courses for ICT companies (FiberCop, Telecom Italia, Italtel, Nokia, Alcatel, Ericsson, etc.). He was invited lecturer in universities abroad. He worked on several research projects with industrial partners, and as PI with ATM S.P.A. (2019-2021, and 2024) and with TIM (2013-2014). He was in IST-FP6 and FP7 EU Projects (MUPBED, NOBEL2, e-Photon/ONe+, BONE, STRONGEST, MobileCloud, SOFNETS) and Italian PRIN projects.
He was local PI in the H2020 project METRO-HAUL. He is currently PI of the WatchEDGE project (within RESTART), funded by NextGenerationEU. He authored over 110 conference papers and 50 journal papers (3590 citations, h-index 30 - Google Scholar, May 2025).
He is inventor in 6 patents. On 2016 he co-founded SWAN networks, spin-off of PoliMi, winner of the TIM #WCAP competition. His current interests are: SDN-NFV, SD-WAN, network automation, edge orchestration. He is/was general chair of IEEE HPSR 2025, IEEE NetSoft 2022, DRCN 2020 and DRCN 2021, TPC chair of IEEE HPSR 2019 and NOC 2014, Track chair of IEEE WCNC2026, and TPC member in many conferences. He is member of the editorial board of Elsevier Optical Switching and Networking, leading guest editor of IEEE OJ-COMMS.
He is Senior Member of the IEEE Communications Society (2008-), member of Boards of Directors of CoRiTeL (Ericsson Research Consortium) (2025-), delegate of PoliMi at the GTTI (Gruppo Telecomunicazioni e Tecnologie dell'Informazione) association (2025-), member of the Faculty Board of the PhD programme in Information Technology of PoliMI (2025-).
