Research Line:
I received my Master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering at University of Brescia (Italy) in 2003 and the PhD in Microsystems Engineering at University of Rome Tor Vergata (Italy) in 2008. During my PhD I was involved in projects on capsule endoscopy funded by South Korea government. From 2009 to 2022 I led research and teaching activities at University of Pisa (Italy) on surgical simulation, including the largest international studies in robot-assisted surgery. I coordinated the Italian part of the multicenter randomized control trial of Fundamentals of Robotic Surgery project, funded by industry and Department of Defense of United States. I have been responsible for the accreditation of EndoCAS (Pisa, Italy), as the only Italian center, from the American College of Surgeons for the training through simulation for 10 years. In 2023 I was appointed Assistant Professor in Bioengineering at Politecnico di Milano (Milan, Italy). My current interests revolve around artificial intelligence in medical imaging and surgery.
I am currently involved in FAIR (Future of Artificial Intelligence Research) project, funded by the Italian Ministry of University and Research.
I am member of the following committees of international surgical societies: Vice-Chair of the International Committee of the American College of Surgeons Accredited Education Institutes, member of the Surgeons and Engineers Committee of the American College of Surgeons Accredited Education Institutes, of the Education Committee of the Clinical Robotic Association, and of the Artificial Intelligence Task Force of the Society of American Gastrointestinal and Endoscopic Surgeons (SAGES).
I am Associate Editor of Artificial Intelligence Review, IEEE Journal of Biomedical and Health Informatics, and Frontiers in Robotics and AI. I am author of more than 50 publications on peer-reviewed journals, and three book chapters.
