The Politecnico di Milano presents Italy’s first Master of Science dedicated to high-performance computing and its multiple applications in various scientific-technological domains: it is the Master of Science in High Performance Computing Engineering, delivered in English.
The course of study, which will welcome the first students in the autumn of 2022 and which has been promoted also by faculty members from the Department of Electronics, Information and Bioengineering, has a strong interdisciplinary character and aims to train engineers with solid preparation in the main computer technologies and architectures for supercomputing, in quantum computing and in mathematical-statistical modeling of complex problems.
The teaching offer has been developed in close connection with the industrial world and with supercomputing centres, contexts in which highly specialized figures are increasingly required to tackle the study of highly complex application problems, from energy sustainability to climatology, from genomics to medicine and pharmacology, from chemistry to finance, from computational biomechanics to aerospace.
Supercomputing offers a decisive competitive advantage in the development of new applications, thanks to the powerful simulation tools and the parallelization of the computational load on high-performance hardware, which allows to accelerate the analysis of large amounts of data, as well as the execution of increasingly complex and sophisticated artificial intelligence algorithms.
The multidisciplinary figure of the high-performance computing engineer that the Politecnico aims to train is completely new in the Italian scenario, where there are some internationally trained profiles who still lack the interdisciplinary skills essential for designing supercomputing applications. With the activation of the new Master of Science in High Performance Computing Engineering, the Politecnico di Milano takes up this challenge and aims to fill this gap thanks to the training of professionals capable of combining computer engineering’s most advanced knowledge, including quantum computing, with the skills of applied mathematics, statistics and physics to address and solve emerging complex problems.
