The Image and Sound Processing Lab (ISPL) research laboratory of the Department of Electronics, Information and Bioengineering (DEIB) of the Politecnico di Milano is working on an innovative dataset in the field of forensic analysis of multimedia objects. The project focuses on audio forensics and involves the production of a series of audio recordings, acquired using a vast number of smartphones.
In recent years, mobile phones have become the main means of communication and collection of most multimedia data. In fact, mobile devices now make it possible to easily obtain a wide range of data, such as photographs and audio and video recordings, which can also be used as evidence in legal proceedings. For this purpose, it is therefore necessary to be able to determine its origin, authenticity and integrity.
A recurring problem in the forensic field is the identification of the device used to generate the data to be analysed. The dataset aims to deepen the research in the field of device identification, going to fill the current scarce presence of data necessary for solving this problem.
The realization of this project is possible thanks to the newspaper Hardware Upgrade, which has made available to the research group a large number of cutting-edge smartphones, necessary to acquire data with an important scientific value.
