The group lead by Prof. Stefano Tebaldini from the Department of Electronics, Information and Bioengineering of the Politecnico di Milano won the first prize in the EUMA Best paper contest for the paper "SAR imaging in automotive scenarios", presented at the 2022 Mediterranean Microwave Symposium. The prize was awarded to Prof. Tebaldini by the European Microwave Association.

The paper describes the basic theory and the experiments conducted with a synthetic aperture radar (SAR) at 77 GHz mounted on the Alfa Romeo Giulia used by the mOve Lab at the Department of Electronics, Information and Bioengineering to test “automotive” applications. Specifically, the SAR imaging technique described in the paper allows the identification of everything surrounding the moving car to a far better accuracy than allowed by current radar systems, and can therefore be successfully used for high-resolution mapping of urban environments.

The research was carried out as part of the activities of the Joint Lab between Politecnico di Milano and HUAWEI.
