Stefano Tebaldini received the M.Sc. degree in Telecommunication Engineering and the Ph.D. degree from Politecnico di Milano in 2005 and 2009, respectively. He became Associate Professor at the Dipartimento di Elettronica, Informazione e Bioingegneria in 2018 and Full Professor in September 2026.
His research focuses on Earth remote sensing using Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR), including system design, advanced signal processing, electromagnetic-scattering modelling, and retrieval of geophysical parameters.
Relevant scientific contributions concern three-dimensional imagery of forests, snow, glaciers, and ice sheets, resulting in new methodologies for quantitative analysis of the vegetation and inferring the internal structure of snow and ice bodies.
On the technological side, his works includes the development of new methodologies for 2-D and 3-D SAR image formation, interferometric processing, multistatic synchronization, and MIMO SAR processing. Notable contributions include the experimental demonstrations of high-resolution automotive MIMO SAR processing and coherent bistatic tomography with two aircraft.
Since his Ph.D., he has been continuously active in competitive international research projects, funded by Space Agencies (ESA and ASI), Ministerial programs, and the Industry. Current relevant roles include:

  • Scientific Coordinator of the BIOMASS Data Innovation and Science Cluster (DISC), responsible for the scientific excellence of the data produced by the BIOMASS spaceborne Mission, launched by the Europena Space Agency (ESA) in 2025;
  • Principal Investigator of the FISA project URANUS (Uav RAdar Net for groUnd displacement Surveys), aimed at developing multistatic UAV-borne SAR formations.

Prof. Tebaldini has been a member of ESA’s BIOMASS Mission Advisory Group (2016–2025), the SAOCOM-CS Expert Group (2014–2016), and the Italian Space Agency advisory committee supporting ESA Earth Observation activities. In 2025, ESA appointed him to an international panel of experts to provide strategic recommendations on Earth Observation activities. He was Lead Proposer of two spaceborne mission concepts within ESA programmes, in 2017 and 2024.
He has authored over 80 peer-reviewed journal papers and several conference papers.
He has taught Remote Sensing and Signal Processing at Politecnico di Milano since 2013, supervised tens of M.Sc. theses and several Ph.D. students.
He is currently the coordinator of the Radar Imaging and Digital Earth (RIDE) Laboratory (https://www.deib.polimi.it/eng/deib-labs/details/105).
