Ione Ianniruberto, a PhD student in Bioengineering at the Department of Electronics, Information and Bioengineering – Politecnico di Milano, has won the Mory Gharib Award for Young Researchers. The award was presented during the 10th International Biofluid & Mechanobiology Symposium, held in Irvine, California, from September 5 to 7, 2025.

The recognition celebrates Ianniruberto’s outstanding contributions to biofluid mechanics, highlighting the innovative nature of his work and its significant impact on the scientific community.

The awarded research focuses on the replacement of the ascending aorta with an artificial graft, a well-established procedure for treating aneurysms that can sometimes cause complications in the descending aorta. Ianniruberto developed an innovative method that allows fully automated simulations of blood–vessel interactions for each patient, both before and after surgery.

These simulations revealed that graft implantation alters downstream blood flow, increasing wall stress and pulse wave velocity—factors that could contribute to structural changes or disease progression in the descending aorta. This approach enables precise assessment of the biomechanical effects of the procedure across multiple patients, paving the way for safer and more personalized strategies in managing aortic aneurysms.
