A group of researchers coordinated by Prof. Piero Fraternali from the Department of Electronics, Information and Bioengineering, Politecnico di Milano is participating in the PERIVALLON project, funded by the European Union under the Horizon Europe key funding programme for research and innovation.

The main goal of the project is to fight environmental crime surrounding the illegal disposal, trafficking and/or trade of different types of waste and refrigerants: an illegal activity that causes significant damage to the environment, climate and human health. Detecting and preventing environmental crimes is particularly complex due to the wide range of waste involved, the need to correlate information from heterogeneous sources, the different authorities involved in tackling this type of crimes and their cross-border nature, as well as the exploitation of legal businesses by criminal actors operating in this area.

To address these challenges, PERIVALLON is developing a state-of-the-art environmental crime detection and investigation platform based on the concept of multidimensional integration of heterogeneous multimodal sensor data, including satellite images, video streams from cameras installed on unmanned aerial vehicles, X-ray scans from stationary or portable devices, information gathered from public online sources, and related administrative documentation.
