Every day a large number of food products remain unsold in stores, especially in the large-scale retail sector. These items could be distributed to people in need. Yet most of them, unfortunately, are still destroyed due to inefficiencies in the way the system for collecting them is organised.
The SIVEQ team (SIVEQ stands for Sistema Integrato di Valorizzazione delle Eccedenze alimentari nel Quartiere, Integrated System for the Distribution of Surplus Food Products in the Neighbourhood) set out from this paradoxical situation with the aim of harnessing emerging technologies to develop a collection process that reduces wastage to a minimum. The aim of the project is to create a software and hardware platform which optimises the process of recovering food surpluses and can be used by large-scale retailers and charitable organisations alike.
The SIVEQ project was one of the winners of the 2017 Polisocial Award. The project’s scientific coordinator is Maurizio Magarini from DEIB, in collaboration with Giacomo Verticale, Davide Scazzoli ed Atul Kumar from DEIB, Marco Melacini from DIG and the project manager Giulia Bartezzaghi from Dipartimento di Ingegneria Gestionale.
