"Tower of Hanoi" NECST team ranked 4th at the RuCTF finals
May 4th, 2017
Abstract
A team of Bachelor's, Master's, and Ph.D. students from the NECST Lab, named "Tower of Hanoi", ranked 4th at the RuCTF finals.
The RuCTF is an annual computer security competition organized by the Ural Federal University. This year's competition started in November 2016 with a preliminary online qualification round. Here, the Politecnico team secured the 12th place out of more than 100 teams, qualifying for the on-site finals. The finals, held in Yekaterinburg in April, saw the participation of 23 Russian and European teams.
The competition followed the usual "capture the flag" rules. Every team manages a server where a number of vulnerable applications run. The goal is to keep all the application functionalities intact, and at the same time attack the other teams' servers. Thus, participants must find and "patch" vulnerabilities, exploit them to implement attacks against the opposing teams, as well as detect attacks and defend from them. All those activities require a wide range of cybersecurity skills.
