Of the 185 faculty members of the Politecnico di Milano who have been included in the ranking of scientists with the highest level of scientific productivity (the top 2% in the world), prepared by Stanford University researchers and published in the prestigious scientific journal PLOS Biology, 60 are from the Department of Electronics, Information and Bioengineering.

The ranking is the result of a collaboration between Stanford University and Elsevier, through the scientific research database Scopus, which provided data sets related to standardized citation indicators referring to as many as 8.6 million researchers at universities and research centers worldwide, according to a metric that considers the number of publications and citations in the related subject areas. The lists, updated to 2021, were produced with reference to 22 scientific areas and 176 sub-categories, according to a classification of the author's profile obtained with advanced machine learning techniques intended to produce results which are normalized and thus comparable across scientific areas.

The analysis produced a list of 195,605 scientists falling in the top 2% of professors and researchers who stand out globally in terms of scientific prestige. Of these, 185 work (or worked) at the Politecnico di Milano and 60, more specifically, at the Department of Electronics, Information and Bioengineering.
