The SHANNON Project, coordinated by Prof. Daniele Ielmini (Department of Electronics, Information and Bioengineering – Politecnico di Milano), has been selected by the European Research Council (ERC) during the first round of the ERC Proof of Concept grants 2022.

The ERC Proof of Concept funds, worth € 150,000 per project, can only be awarded to researchers who have already received ERC funding and are intended to support scientific research in the earliest stages of application, making it possible to assess the practical feasibility of scientific hypotheses, explore commercial opportunities and apply for patents.

SHANNON (Secure Hardware with AdvaNced NONvolatile memories) will involve the development of a new circuit for cryptography based on the concept of a physical unclonable function (PUF). Encryption keys are generated by means of random memory states rendered completely invisible thanks to a new algorithm and cell structure, making this a very attractive solution for securing internet of things (IoT) systems.
