For the first time in Italy, the Politecnico di Milano hosted the international edition of the Field Robot Event, a prestigious competition focused on robotics applied to agriculture. The event took place from June 9 to 12, 2025, at the "Da Pippo" farm in Rodano (MI), bringing together around 150 students and faculty members, divided into 15 teams from 9 different countries.
The teams competed in highly complex challenges designed to test the robots’ capabilities in realistic farming scenarios: from autonomous navigation through rows of corn to the recognition and classification of weeds and fruit plants, all the way to the most demanding task—night-time navigation and the identification of specific plants visible only under ultraviolet light.
The event was organized by the AIRLab of the Department of Electronics, Information and Bioengineering at Politecnico di Milano, under the supervision of Prof. Matteo Matteucci, in collaboration with the group led by Prof. Davide Facchinetti from the University of Milan.
The AIRLab POLIMI team, composed of students from the Robotics course, achieved an outstanding result by winning first place in Task 4, which focused on autonomous night navigation and the detection of mushrooms using UV light. The team, supported by Politecnico di Milano in international competitions, was mentored by Prof. Matteucci along with tutors Mirko Usuelli and Simone Mentasti.
