Abstract
On December 10th, 2024 at 2.30 pm the seminar titled "Optimal Periodic Control of LTI Systems" will take place at DEIB Beta Room (Building 24).
This seminar tackles the optimal partial output feedback control problem for discrete-time time-invariant systems with quadratic cost. It is shown via the theory of periodic systems and by means of simple examples, that the classical linear time-invariant H2 optimal full-order output feedback controller can be outperformed by a linear periodic full-order output feedback controller. This fact is not available till now in the literature. A new design procedure for the optimal controller is proposed via LMI. Illustrative examples are solved, solutions are compared and consequences are discussed.
José C. Geromel was born in Itatiba, SP, Brazil in 1952. He received the Bs. and Ms. degrees in Electrical Engineering from the University of Campinas - UNICAMP, Brazil, in 1975 and 1976, respectively, and the Docteur d' État degree from University Paul Sabatier - LAAS / CNRS, Toulouse, France, in 1979. He joined the School of Electrical and Computer Engineering at UNICAMP in 1975, where he is a professor of Control Systems Analysis and Design. In 1987 he held a visiting professor position at Milan Polytechnic Institute, Milan, Italy. He has been a member of the Editorial Board of the International Journal of Robust and Nonlinear Control and Associate Editor of European Journal of Control and Nonlinear Analysis: Hybrid Systems.
He was awarded in 1994 and 2014 the Zeferino Vaz Award for his teaching and research activities at UNICAMP and, in 2007 the Scopus Award jointly awarded by Elsevier and CAPES / Brazil. Since 1991 he has been a Fellow 1-A and in 1997 he was elected member of the Electrical Engineering Committee of the CNPq - Brazilian National Council for Scientific and Technological Development. From 1998 to 2002 he served as the Dean for Graduate Studies at UNICAMP.
Since 1998 he has been a member of the Brazilian Academy of Science. In 1999 he was named Chevalier dans l' Ordre des Palmes Académiques by the French Minister of National Education. In 2003 he was elected member of the IFAC Council for the term 2003-2005. In 2010 he received the Docteur Honoris Causa degree from the University Paul Sabatier, Toulouse, France and was named a member of the Brazilian Order of Scientific Merit by the President of the Federative Republic of Brazil. In 2011 he was named Distinguished Lecturer by the IEEE Control Systems Society. In 2018 he was promoted to Grã-Cruz of the Brazilian Order of Scientific Merit.
In 2024 he received the Bottura-Castrucci Award granted by the SBA - Brazilan Society of Automatics. He is co-author of the books Control Theory and Design - with P. Colaneri and A. Locatelli, Academic Press, 1997, Análise Linear de Sistemas Dinâmicos, in Portuguese, - with A. G. B. Palhares, Edgard Blücher, 2004, Controle Linear de Sistemas Dinâmicos, in Portuguese, - with R. H. Korogui, Edgard Blücher, 2011, and Análise Linear de Sinais, in Portuguese, - with G. S. Deaecto, Edgard Blücher, 2019.
