Project abstract
The project’s aim is to realize an expert system for diagnosis and support of restoration activities on armed concrete structures suffering from degradation, tipically parts of electric power plants. These electric power stations, like many other buildings, are partly built with reinforced concrete and are subject to many types of degradation. The project’s customer (CESI) wanted to realize this instrument for the “Autorità per l’Energia”.
The project involves also the “Dipartimento di Chimica, Materiali e Ingegneria Chimica” (CMIC) “Giulio Natta” of Politecnico di Milano. The project ended with the delivery of the system to CESI and the following positive evaluation by the “Autorità per l’Energia”. The system is remotely accessible on the Department’s server for qualified operators only.

Project results
The project started in 2004 and ended in 2006. It has been developed through a long series of knowledge acquisition sessions with experts of CMIC and of CESI and it has produced an expert system realized in web and java technology that drives the operators towards the identification of the kinds of measurements necessary for a diagnosis and their collection. On the basis of the collected data the expert system generates a diagnosis in terms of residual life and works out suggestions for possible actions for the restoration and recovery of the degradation.
