The Dipartimento di Elettronica, Informazione e Bioingegneria (DEIB) of the Politecnico di Milano, in cooperation with Akka Italia, Vodafone Italia, YAPE, I.F.E. ITALIA and ANOTHEREALITY, has designed and developed the project BASE5G, whose aim is to simplify the interaction between users and their surrounding environment through 5G technology.
Matteo Cesana, full professor at DEIB and coordinator of the project, states that BASE5G is inspired by the vision that “environments (homes, cars, public spaces, schools, offices, sports centres, etc.) should adapt themselves to users in order to offer more customized services. The realization of this vision requires the interaction and the integration of different expertise and technologies, including: distributed devices and sensors to collect data from the environment; a broadband, low latency and highly reliable 5G technological infrastructure to convey huge amounts of data to the system’s intelligence and to communicate with the users; efficient tools and architectures to elaborate those data and extract information from them; and, finally, innovative, immersive, intuitive and simple audio-visual user interfaces”.
BASE5G aims therefore at developing solutions for smart environments and services based on 5G networks, with particular reference to five different scenarios: Smart City/Smart Campus, which involves the development of integrated systems to manage parking lots and directions and to provide information to citizens; Smart Vehicles and Mobility, which involves the creation of solutions to customize vehicle cabins, with positive repercussions on comfort and road safety; Smart Learning, which involves the development of platforms that allow citizens and students to create and enjoy contents; Smart Logistics, which involves the realisation of a logistics system for industrial environments based on a fleet of wheeled autonomous drones, connected to each other and to their surroundings; Sport and Leisure Events, which involves the proposal of services to monitor those who participate in sport and social events in urban areas.
BASE 5G is among the projects who have won Regione Lombardia’s Call HUB Ricerca e Innovazione and it is therefore funded by Regional Operational Programme (ERDF ROP) 2014-2020.
