Abstract
A. Leva, F. Terraneo, I. Giacomello, W. Fornaciari, "Event-based power/performance-aware thermal management for high-density microprocessors", IEEE Transactions on Control Systems Technology 26 (2), 2018, 535-550 won the 2019 IEEE Transactions on Control Systems Technology Outstanding Paper Award.
The work presents a technique for maintaining the temperature of a microprocessor below a given threshold, also variable over time depending on the operating conditions, acting on the clock frequency and limiting the consequent (and inevitable) slowing down of processing to the minimum necessary. The technique - patented - is based on event-triggered control and can be realized in hardware, software or mixed technology. The computational weight of the possible software part is minimal, as are the area and the consumption of the hardware part. Tests carried out on commercial hardware show clear advantages over the state of the art.
