With the BATTITO project, Prof. Paola Occhetta from the Department of Electronics, Information and Bioengineering at Politecnico di Milano has been awarded funding from the European Research Council (ERC) under the Horizon Europe programme.

BATTITO aims to revolutionise preclinical drug testing by addressing unexpected cardiac toxicity, the leading cause of failure in new medicines. The project, developed through a collaboration between the Department of Electronics, Information and Bioengineering at Politecnico di Milano and its spin-off BiomimX, will create the first fully automated and intelligent “heart-on-chip” system. By combining a three-dimensional model of human cardiac tissue with an artificial intelligence-based control system, BATTITO seeks to make testing more reliable and reduce the need for animal experimentation.
