Marco Carminati, Marco Paracchini, Andrea Giudici, and Simone Mentasti are among the key contributors to the research activities of the Department of Electronics, Information and Bioengineering at Politecnico di Milano within the Smart Eyewear Lab, the joint centre with EssilorLuxottica dedicated to developing the next generation of smart glasses.
Their work contributes to the development of advanced technologies aimed at redefining how people interact with their surrounding environment, with a particular focus on eye tracking—a key enabling technology for multiple applications: from capturing images based on the user’s point of attention, to gaze monitoring for improving driving safety, to new forms of accessible interaction for people with disabilities.
This research activity is positioned at an advanced stage of technological development and is oriented toward a new generation of smart glasses that are not yet available on the market. In this context, the Smart Eyewear Lab represents a point of integration between academic research and industrial development, fostering technology transfer.
The main challenges concern the integration of advanced sensors, algorithms, and processing capabilities into compact, wearable devices, while meeting strict constraints in terms of energy consumption and comfort. The research develops at the intersection of microelectronics, optoelectronics, and embedded machine learning, with the goal of combining high performance and usability.
