Prof. Simone Garatti, from the Department of Electronics, Information and Bioengineering – Politecnico di Milano, has received the 2025 IEEE CSS “Roberto Tempo” Best CDC Paper Award. The prestigious recognition was conferred on him, together with his co-authors, Profs. Marco C. Campi and Algo Carè from the University of Brescia, during the 64th IEEE Conference on Decision and Control, held in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, from December 10 to 12, 2025, for the paper Average number of mistakes in sequential risk-averse scenario decision-making.
The award is presented annually to the best paper among those delivered at the previous year’s conference, based on criteria such as originality, potential impact on control theory and its technological or implementation aspects, and clarity of presentation.
The awarded paper, developed within the framework of the PRIN 2022 project “The Scenario Approach for Control and Non-Convex Design”, proposes an innovative data-driven approach to support decision-making and control strategies capable of adapting to the environment based on the available data.
In particular, the paper introduces a sequential decision-making scheme in which, at each step, both a candidate solution and an estimate of the associated risk are provided. The decision to adopt the solution depends on comparing the estimated risk with a predefined admissibility threshold. The contribution investigates how to properly assess the average number of mistakes in this context, showing that intuitive evaluations can be misleading. The proposed approach finds applications in several areas, including model predictive control, investment decision-making, and sequential forecasting methods.
