Prof. Luciano Baresi, from the Department of Electronics, Information and Bioengineering – Politecnico di Milano, has been appointed Scientific Coordinator of the Working Group on Software Engineering established by the National Interuniversity Consortium for Informatics (CINI).

Prof. Baresi was also one of the promoters of the establishment of the new group, together with Prof. Andrea De Lucia (University of Salerno), Prof. Massimiliano Di Penta (University of Sannio), and Prof. Leonardo Mariani (University of Milano-Bicocca).

The new group aims to strengthen and reposition Italy’s academic and research landscape in the field of software engineering, with the ambition of becoming a key interlocutor for industry and for national and international policymakers.

The initiative stems from the desire to enhance and coordinate the research activities that numerous Italian groups are already conducting at the international level, while also replicating successful experiences and models developed in other countries. The group will also serve as a bridge to major global scientific communities, such as the IEEE Technical Council on Software Engineering (TCSE) and the ACM Special Interest Group on Software Engineering (SIGSOFT).

As a national entity, the CINI working group will be able to interact directly with the European Union and Italian institutions, contributing to the definition of the strategic role of software engineering in society, the qualification of professional profiles in the field, and the promotion of dedicated calls and research projects.

The overarching goal is to establish an authoritative and catalytic point of reference for the Italian software engineering community, at a time when software plays an increasingly central role in society and artificial intelligence is becoming ever more pervasive.
