The paper ‘Shaping Next-Generation RAN Topologies to Meet Future Traffic Demands: A Peak Throughput Study’, written by Paolo Fiore, Ph.D. student in Information Technology at the ANTLab, and Prof. Ilario Filippini from the Department of Electronics, Information and Bioengineering of the Politecnico di Milano, together with Danilo De Donno from the Huawei Milan Research Center, received the Best Paper Award at the IEEE International Symposium on Personal, Indoor and Mobile Radio Communications, which was held in Toronto, Canada, from September 5 to 8, 2023.

The study analyzes the optimal network layout in real urban scenarios of millimeter-wave Radio Access Networks (mm-wave RANs) equipped with Integrated Access and Backhaul (IAB) and Reconfigurable Intelligent Surfaces (RIS) using optimization models to derive practical design guidelines. In particular, it shows how the specific optimization of the peak user throughput of such networks can remarkably improve the download speed perceived by users without sacrificing the mean throughput of the network. In addition, it shows how networks with star-like topologies can achieve the best peak throughputs.
