Dr. Andrea Ficchì from the Department of Electronics, Information and Bioengineering of the Politecnico di Milano has been selected along with other seven outstanding postdoctoral fellows from all over the world to help solve the key challenges facing coastal livelihoods in the framework of the joint AXA – IOC UNESCO call for proposals launched in fall 2021 as a part of the Ocean Decade.

Dr. Ficchì won the AXA Research Fund’s Post-Doctoral Fellowship with a research project titled “Strengthening coastal communities' resilience through better forecasting and projecting compound flood risk”.Using machine learning techniques, the project will seek to better predict compound flood risk and identify high-risk areas in order to strengthen anticipatory humanitarian action and crop insurance, to reduce the impacts of extreme weather events and climate change.

The Fellowship research project of Dr. Andrea Ficchì will start in the Fall of 2022, and it will be carried out alongside Prof. Andrea Castelletti, project Advisor at Politecnico di Milano, and in collaboration with international partners.
