Urban Environmental Hazards and Health: A One Health Risk Perspective

Abstract

Climate change is increasingly evident as the reality of our time rather than a future menace. Cities are where environmental hazards and population health meet most directly. Heat, pollution, flooding, wildfires, degraded urban environments, and unequal access to protective resources are not only environmental issues: they shape the physical health and mental wellbeing of the population.

This seminar will explore urban environmental health through a One Health risk perspective, using the IPCC risk framework to address the interconnections among hazards, exposure, vulnerability, adaptation, and institutional response. The aim is to create a scientific space for transdisciplinary dialogue on how urban environmental-health risks are produced, how they can be assessed, and how evidence can support healthier and more adapted living spaces.

The event will move from environmental hazards in human settlements to exposure, vulnerability, and adaptation, then to integrated risk assessment, surveillance, and early warning, closing with the translation of scientific evidence into public health action, planning, and One Health governance.

The seminar is part of the events roadmap towards the 5th International One Health Conference, From Environmental Crises to Integral Ecology: A One Health Approach to Climate Change, Pollution, Biodiversity Loss, and Land Degradation. Sousse, Tunisia and online, October 28 to 30, 2026.
