Abstract
This is IT!, the annual event dedicated to celebrating the excellence of PhD candidates in Information Technology at Politecnico di Milano, will take place on September 15, 2026, starting at 9:30 a.m., in the Conference Room of Building 20A on the Leonardo Campus.
The morning will offer an opportunity for discussion and exchange around the research results of PhD candidates whose theses have been selected for the Springer Briefs, the Chorafas Foundation Award, and the “Prof. Florian Daniel” Award. Students will have the opportunity to present their work publicly, helping to highlight the quality, variety, and impact of the research carried out within the PhD Programme in Information Technology.
This year’s edition will feature a talk by Emilio Frazzoli, Professor at ETH Zurich, entitled Autonomy for Urban Mobility: the Other A in AI. Twenty years after the DARPA Urban Challenge, the talk will explore the evolution of autonomous driving, which has now moved beyond the experimental stage towards increasingly widespread deployment, as well as the new challenges associated with integrating autonomous vehicles into urban mobility systems. Particular attention will be given to the rules and principles that should govern interactions between people and autonomous systems in public spaces.
Emilio Frazzoli is Professor of Dynamic Systems and Control at ETH Zurich, where his research focuses primarily on robotics, autonomous systems, and intelligent mobility. A former full professor at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), in 2013 he co-founded nuTonomy with Karl Iagnemma, a startup dedicated to developing autonomous driving technologies that later became part of Motional, where he served as Chief Scientist until 2021. At MIT, he also led the research group that carried out the first public demonstration of an autonomous mobility (“robotaxi”) service and analysed its social and economic impact using real-world transportation data.
Throughout his career, he has received numerous awards for his scientific contributions, including the IEEE George S. Axelby Award, the IEEE Kiyo Tomiyasu Award, and the IEEE George N. Saridis Award. He was named an IEEE Fellow in 2019 and, in 2022, received the RSS Test of Time Award together with Sertac Karaman for their work on the RRT* algorithm. Frazzoli holds a Laurea degree in Aeronautical Engineering from Sapienza University of Rome and a PhD in Aeronautics and Astronautics from MIT.
