DMLab - Data Management Lab

Activities

The Data Management Lab (DMLab) is dedicated to advancing both foundational and practical solutions for managing complex, large-scale data. The Lab designs, researches, and validates methods, architectures, and tools essential for guaranteeing data integrity, quality, efficient querying, and seamless integration across both relational and non-relational sources.

The research carried out in the Lab focuses specifically on core principles and applications, ensuring that data is fair and ready for use in advanced AI and machine learning systems. This fundamental Data Preparation process requires tackling complex transformations like cleaning, integration, and semantic-driven reconciliation.

Another key area is Ranking, which involves developing algorithms and systems for ranking query results according to given preferences, enabling efficient retrieval of the most relevant information based on qualitative or quantitative criteria.

The work on non-relational data models seeks to enable reasoning capabilities even in the presence of structural complexity, as in the case of Graph Databases. This includes developing support for extending classical relational concepts (triggers, ER schemata, constraints) to non-relational contexts. These advancements are critical for notable applications such as health data and financial systems.

Finally, the Lab is exploring LLM-Enhanced Data Management, investigating how generative AIs can be leveraged to simplify data interaction and complex query management.

In all these research areas, the Lab also focuses on the measure and analysis of Fairness in the management of data and queries across applications (ML, recommendation, ranking), which is vital to prevent discriminatory outcomes and ensure ethical deployment.

DMLab combines theoretical foundations with experimental validation on real-world datasets and use cases, often in collaboration with industrial partners, public institutions, and interdisciplinary teams at Politecnico di Milano in the areas of biomedical research and urban planning.
