Sommario
The humble Fast Fourier Transform (FFT) is the work horse of wireless communications, radio sensing, and electronic warfare systems. The talk summarizes FIU’s custom wireless testbeds spanning the 1-6, 6-24, and 110-170 GHz bands that have been developed by the presenter’s lab to make use of new types of low-complexity approximate FFT algorithm that scales as complexity O(N). The work on FFT, funded by DARPA and ONR, focuses on array receivers covering up to 32 channels, and array processing algorithms, MIMO systems, and neural and classical algorithms for communications and spectral awareness.
The talk covers experimental platforms that have resulted from ONR, DARPA and NSF awards including NSF SWIFT that explored various aspects of approximate FFTs for radio and wireless applications. The areas of interest includes low-complexity modems, multi-beam digital beamformers, adaptive null-formers for receive and transmit arrays in FR1 and FR3, FFT-based spectrum sensing and perception with array processing, full-duplex radios in FR3,
D-band wireless systems including sensing and communications, and several other algorithms such as polyphase filterbanks that have been tested across the entire spectrum from 100 MHz up to 170 GHz. Hardware systems and FFT processing systems will be described starting from antennas down to digital backends operating on RF-SoC chips with sample rates of up to 64 GS/s and instantaneous baseband bandwidth up to 64 GHz. The work is part of ongoing research on wireless testbeds supported by NSF TIP associated with AI-ready testbed program. The talk includes nose-to-tail details starting from mathematical and algorithmic innovations, circuits, architectures, microwave systems, mixed-signal systems, DSP and FPGA/RF-SoCs, analog IC, custom digital CMOS work, and AI-enabled GPU backends.
