On December 15th, 2022 at 12.30 pm, a new CommTech Talk will take place at DEIB Seminar Room – Building 20.
The rise of the 5G technology has set new requirements and use cases. Such challenges have shown the inefficiency of the black-box monolithic architectures, paving the way to open approaches like O-RAN.
In O-RAN, the classic gNB is disaggregated into different units coordinated by the RAN Intelligent Controller (RIC). Thanks to this, researchers and network operators can leverage RIC centralized abstraction to create AI solutions for various use-cases such as on-demand Traffic Steering, Anomaly Detection, and Quality of Service management.
In this talk, we propose ns-O-RAN, a software integration between a real-world near Real-Time RIC and an ns-3 simulated RAN. ns-O-RAN is designed to be a framework for the development of xApps, and the generation of realistic datasets with no O-RAN infrastructure expenses. Following the O-RAN specifications, this integration uses the E2 interface to connect different simulated base stations with the RIC enabling the exchange of E2 messages and RAN KPIs to be consumed by standard xApps. Finally, ns-O-RAN can work in a stand-alone mode, i.e. without the connection with the RIC to parallelize data collection campaigns and AI training.
CommTech Talks @ POLIMI are a series of seminars and panels organized by the study program in Telecommunication Engineering of Politecnico di Milano for stimulating the networking between students and people from industry and research.
