Everybody is crazy about the metaverse: media is constantly talking about it as the future internet is already happening. Every week, we hear about some company opening their space in the metaverse or about someone having bought a hundred square meters of pixels for tens of thousands of euros. But where is this "metaverse"? How do I visit those newly spaces opened from brands? Why do we need it? Why the metaverse seems to be today, but it's always "in the future," while life is still happening with HTTP and web browsers? In this talk, we will try to declutter what a "metaverse" is today, how it is built, and why the likes of Roblox and Fortnite are now called metaverses while, two years ago, they were called multiplayer video games. We will try to answer these questions and discuss why the metaverse was intended to be one and only one, but you'll continue to read metaverse-s, plural, for a while.
The event will be held online by Webex.
