Emeritus Professor of Politecnico di Milano.
Nicola Schiavoni was born in Manduria (TA) in 1950 and received a "Laurea" degree in Ingegneria Elettronica (Electrical Engineering) from the Politecnico di Milano in 1973. Since then, he has been with the Centro di Teoria dei Sistemi of the CNR (Italian National Research Council) and the Politecnico di Milano.
Since 1990 he was Full Professor of Automatica (Automatic Control) in the Dipartimento di Elettronica, Informazione e Bioingegneria (Department of Electronics, Information and Bioengineering), formerly Dipartimento di Elettronica e Informazione (Department of Electronics and Information), formerly Dipartimento di Elettronica (Department of Electronics).
His research activity took place in the field of System and Control Theory and Applications, with special reference to:
1. Simplified models of dynamical systems;
2. Optimal periodic control;
3. Differential games;
4. Insensitive and robust control;
5. Decentralized control;
6. Zero-error regulation;
7. Fault-tolerant control;
8. Network control;
9. Parameter optimization of structurally constrained regulators;
10. Control systems computer-aided design;
11. Multirate control systems;
12. Fuzzy control;
13. Applications to electrical power plants control;
14. Applications to large space structures control;
15. Other applications.
In the last years of his career, he was mainly working on topics 5, 6, 7 and 8.
The results achieved are witnessed by about 100 journal articles and conference papers.
Furthermore, he worked on many research and consultancy contracts, on methodological topics and applications.
He also is the (co)author of a textbook on the fundamentals of automatic control, also translated in spanish.
He spent periods of study and research with the Department of Mechanical Engineering, University of California, Berkeley, USA, and the Control and Management Systems Division, University of Cambridge, Cambridge, UK. He gave seminars in Italy and abroad.
He was a member of the Società Italiana Docenti e Ricercatori in Automatica (Italian Society of Professors and Researchers in Automatic Control), where he also served as a Member of the Executive Council, and of the Associazione Nazionale Italiana per l'Automazione (Italian National Association for Automation), where he also served as Chair of the Milano Chapter and Vicechair of the full society.
At the Politecnico di Milano, Nicola Schiavoni was the Chair of the Consiglio di Corso di Laurea in Ingegneria Informatica (Council for the "Laurea" Degree in Computer Science) and the Vicechair of the Dipartimento di Elettronica e Informazione (Department of Electronics and Information). From June 2000 to December 2006, he has been serving as the Dean of the Facoltà di Ingegneria dell'Informazione (Information Engineering Faculty), formerly V Facoltà di Ingegneria (5th Engineering Faculty). From May 2011 to June 2013 he was the Garante delle Trasparenza.
He retired on November 1st, 2016.
