Prof. GAUTIERI ALFONSO
Associate professor
Alfonso Gautieri has obtained the PhD degree in Bioengineering (2009) at Politecnico di Milano with a Dissertation on multiscale modelling of collagen tissue. In 2010 he was awarded the Fondazione Rocca postdoctoral fellowship within the MIT-Italy Program, hence in 2010-11 he worked at the Laboratory of Atomistic and Molecular Modeling of MIT under the supervision of Prof. Markus Buehler and in the Biomechanics Group at Politecnico di Milano under the supervision of Prof. Alberto Redaelli. Since September 2011, he is postdoctoral fellow at Politecnico di Milano and Research Affiliate at MIT. His research focuses on understanding the mechanics of biomolecules and of biomedical materials starting at fundamental -atomistic- level by using a computational biology approach. The aim is to further develop the comprehension of the structure-properties relationship in biologic tissues and biomaterials. This detailed knowledge, based on atomistic information, would help the understanding of the mechanisms underlying pathologic conditions as well as the development of new bio-inspired materials and thus presents an opportunity to institute a new paradigm of bioengineering at the interface of engineering and biology. He is author of more than 20 peer-review papers (H-index =7, total citations= 193), PI of several national and European High Performance Computing grants and participant in national and European funded projects.
