Abstract
In nonlinear physics, the term soliton refers to stable and self-localized field distributions intrinsically robust against localized perturbations. Extensive theoretical and experimental studies have pinpointed Nematic Liquid Crystals (NLC) as an excellent medium for investigation of optical solitons and their features in highly nonlocal media.
A brief review will be given on the physical origin of nematicons (spatial solitons in NLC), together with a view on some of their applications, e.g. confinement and routing of weaker signals and all-optical definition and control of guided-wave circuits.
