DEIB scientific research reveal the secret of the swallows
November 21st, 2018
Abstract
Renato Casagrandi, DEIB Professor, and his PhD student Mattia Pancerasa, in collaboration with the Department of Environmental Sciences and Politics of the University of Milan, have developed a research on the particular ability of the swallows to identify the right moment to fly from Africa to Europe based on climate-related signals.
The research, published in "Scientific Reports", analyzed the data collected about the migration of the swallows over a century in Europe and identified that the temperatures in the places chosen by the swallows for wintering in Africa are closely related to those at their arrival in the breeding areas in Europe.
