Electric cars: a possible and convenient transition? A study by the Politecnico di Milano reveals it. This is the conclusion of a survey conducted by the researchers of the MOVE laboratory of the DEIB.
About 13% of the total private vehicle owners could immediately buy an electric car, without changing their habits, having the realistic availability of a domestic charging point, and balancing costs compared to a petrol car in less than 8 years (with current state incentives on purchase).

The work is entirely based on real data: in fact over 100 million journeys of private vehicles have been analyzed, monitored over a period of 12 months. The results were obtained by crossing an analysis of the distances, an in-depth economic evaluation of the purchase of an electric car and a geographical analysis of the positioning of the home to quantify the probability of actually having a home charging point.

There is therefore an immediate opportunity to accelerate the spread of electric vehicles, even without waiting for the development of a public charging network. This opportunity could be further increased by promoting car sharing mechanisms, which would facilitate the achievement of the economic "break-even" of the electric car, and therefore the reduction of the need to introduce incentives.
