The Broad Institute, a centre of excellence for computational genomics, has published a workspace that demonstrates the GenoMetric Query Language (GMQL), created by a team from Politecnico di Milano.
GeCo (Data-Driven Genomic Computing) is an Advanced ERC Grant, directed by Prof. Stefano Ceri of DEIB, which aims to improve the analysis of "big data" resulting from genome sequencing, in order to give effective answers to many questions of biology and medicine.
The GeCo project team developed GMQL (GenoMetric Query Language), a language and system for querying large genomic datasets, produced by international consortia. Broad Institute's Data Science Group is responsible for FireCloud, an open platform for genomic data analysis that provides accounting, security and high performance. At the end of a collaboration between the two groups, GMQL has been made available on FireCloud. Using a public workspace created for GMQL, researchers using FireCloud can see GMQL "at work" on three increasingly complex case studies, and can then use the GMQL code for integrating and completing their data analysis pipelines.
