Research policy
Research is the main focus of DEI, pursued according to the highest international quality standards. The four department sections gather a consolidated competence in Systems and Control, Computer Science and Engineering, Electronics, and Telecommunications. Researchers in these fields pursue challenging research goals that take them to the top of the international research community in their respective interest areas.
Core research goes in parallel with interdisciplinary initiatives.
Broad ranging research programs, often originating by projects carried out in collaboration with the industry or promoted by the European Union, foster cross-fertilization in diverse fields. Multidisciplinary activities take advantage of the departmental laboratories, where researchers of different sectors meet to work together on concrete experimentations. Examples of active interdisciplinary research areas are:
- multimedia, which gathers competences from physics, acoustics, digital signal processing, telecommunications, computer architectures, and software design;
- ubiquitous computing, pervasive systems, and domotics, where sensors, microelectronic circuits, automatic control, computer architectures, ad hoc mobile networks, interface design are relevant;
- robotics and mechatronics, which are integrating technologies ranging from sensors, signal processing, motion control, artificial intelligence, mechanics up to neuroscience;
- biosensors and bioelectronics, which are opening the way to directly interface microelectronic circuits and systems to cells and tissues, providing new devices and techniques.
The quality of research is also witnessed by the high number of DEI members that participate in the scientific boards of prestigious international journals, conferences and research associations.
The Department is registered in
