Focus

PoliCom - POLItecnico Comunicazioni Ottiche Milano - is a Research Center of DEI, operated by personnel from Politecnico di Milano and Foundation Politecnico di Milano. PoliCom was born on 2009 as a continuation of CoreCom, a previous Research Center owned by a Consortium Politecnico di Milano-Pirelli Cable and Systems, expired in December 2008 after 13 years of activities. The mission of PoliCom is to coordinate and consolidate competencies and labs in the field of photonics, for optical communications and beyond. PoliCom inherited the Labs and part of the Research Personnel of CoreCom. At PoliCom, competencies and interests of DEI and other departments of Politecnico di Milano meet to realize challenging and ambitious projects in collaboration with industrial and public subjects.
PoliCom staff is made of expert and qualified research personnel and operates one of largest and qualified optical communication experimental facilities in Italy.

PoliCom is structured in 4 main Labs:
  • Optical Communications Systems: focused on the design of new systems in the optical transport and access domains;

  • Integrated Optics: targeting the design and development of new integrated-optics concepts and devices;

  • Optical Fiber and Optical Sensor: for the study and development of new fiber and optical fiber sensors;

  • Optical Technologies: aimed at experimenting and applying new materials and technologies in the photonic domain.

Most relevant research achievements

PoliCom is directly involved in the design and characterization of integrated-optic circuits in all the platforms, mainly Glass and SOI. It is the home of the ASPIC software for circuit design and one of the leading labs for “slow-wave” technology.

Photonics and Photovoltaics
PoliCom is opening a new approach to the third-generation solar photovoltaic by transposing photonic concepts and technologies to develop high-efficiency static concentrators for solar modules.

Optical access
PoliCom is involved in the development of the so-called WDM-PON network aimed to offer a point-to-point lightpath connection to users.

High-capacity optical transport
PoliCom is developing newgeneration optical transport, where optics and high-performance electronics-DSP increase the optical communication transport efficiency close to the Shannon-limit.
