Computer Science and Engineering > Information systems

Research in Information Systems at Politecnico di Milano concerns several aspects related to planning and conceptual and architectural design of information systems. Research focuses on initial design phases and corresponding high-level design issues, addressing the alignment between requirements and design solutions. The focus is on evaluating the impact of design choices, on using components at conceptual level for information systems design, on technological aspects of IS development. In particular the research line focuses on a number of specific research themes: design of adaptive information systems based on services, process modeling, information systems security, energy efficiency, risk and safety management, representation of spatial information and events, information quality, and sentiment analysis.

Most relevant research achievements

Design of services and processes in information systems
The group has proposed PAWS, an approach to service-based IS design and management based on adaptive mechanisms. Relevant research results include composition of services based on Quality of Service (QoS), QoS optimization, web service discovery and exception management.

Information security and safety analysis
Research in security considers privacy in service systems and clouds, confidentiality and integrity in power grids, and integrated IS architectural solutions. Safety analysis and risk awareness in work environments are other research issues, centered on architectures for risk awareness based on sensors, wearable services, risk prevention strategies, and interoperability among technological platforms. Research is based on simulation software for self-healing and autonomous systems.

Information quality
This research line has defined models and methods for assessment/improvement of data quality, and has developed frameworks for quality-oriented process analysis. Different considered contexts are: cooperative IS, multichannel services, self-healing web services, sensor networks, datawarehouses and Web applications (mashups). Methodological approaches to process design centered on monitoring and improving quality have been proposed. The group cooperates with the Web Engineering and Data Base groups in the field of Web applications and of methods for quality-aware management in sensor networks.

Social Media Intelligence and Sentiment Analysis
This research line has developed methodologies and tools for social media intelligence. Research challenges regard measurement of social media information impact, design of applications based on crowdsourcing, and the role of posts’ content and of sentiment in crowd opinion-making.

Green information systems
Support of IS to energy efficiency is studied in the EU GAMES (Green Active Management of Service Centres) and ECO2Clouds Projects, aimed to define Green Performance Indicators and to improve the energy efficiency and environmental impact of information systems. The Industria 2015–Sensori Project studies services for energy-efficient buildings. The EnergIT Project developed a methodology for “green” design of data centers for SMEs.

Spatial Information Systems and Emergency Management Information Systems
This research studies validation of spatial constraints methods and tools dealing with collapsed surfaces and with different spatial databases, integrating the use of workflow technology. Methodologies and tools to support Emergency Management life-cycle based on defined contingency plans are studied, integrating data from sensors and social networks, and designing response activities.
