Thesis abstract:  
Nuclear spectroscopy is a science born at the beginning of the last century. Its purpose is to measure radiation, in order to extract useful informations. Thanks to these informations it is possible, for example, to obtain clues about matter structure and physical properties of materials, to perform astronomical investigations, environmental monitoring, medical diagnostics. For the great interest that these disciplines show, the research about nuclear spectroscopy has come into prominence.
The first electronic instruments devised for spectroscopy were based on analog circuitry. Modern digital electronic gives now the possibility to perform more efficient processing and to extract at best the information. The accuracy requested for spectroscopy measurements can reach the order of 1 part over 10000, which means that systems offer, among others, low noise and very fine filtering features. The signals to be elaborated are obtained from sensors called detectors: due to the working principle of these devices, the information extraction results in a difficult task. Moreover, factors of measure degradation (noise, non-linearity, disturbances) impose severe requests both to hardware and software processing stages. Aim of the thesis work is the development and implementation of hardware and software digital architectures to extract at best the information from detected radiations. The work focuses mainly on two aspects. First, the optimization of the analog conditioning stage be-tween the preamplifier and the A/D converter is carried out. Second, different digital processing architectures and their implementation into configurable devices (FPGA and DSP) are brought to a conclusion with on-field experimental validation.
