PROMETEO: A monitoring system for rock fall forecast

A research group of Politecnico di Milano coordinated by Prof. Cesare Alippi, has developed a unique and innovative hybrid wireless/wired system for the prevention of rock falls. A network of special sensors, sensitive to micro-acoustic emissions in the rock as well as mounting more traditional sensors has been installed on the San Martino mountain by the “Ragni di Lecco” alpine group. The monitoring system transmits real time data to the monitoring centre and commands back to the rock fall.
The experiment is part of the strategic project Prometeo (PROtezione pubblica, MEtodologie e TEcnologie Operative), focusing on civil protection and homeland security (public protection) topics.
