Nowadays, Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) are intensively studied for a wide range of military and civil applications, like surveillance and reconnaissance missions, large airborne targets imitation, aerial surveys for agriculture, traffic monitoring, pollution control, meteorological data collection, pipeline survey, early fire detection, rescue missions, wildlife population monitoring, etc. Many of these previously mentioned tasks can be carried out faster and more efficiently by a group of UAVs flying in formation. From a practical point of view, formation flight implementation requires taking into account several separate aspects of UAV flight such as a quick takeoff of several aircrafts. A magnetic launchers are an excellent appliance to put several UAVs in the air quickly and efficiently.
The seminar, in the first part, will focus on the problem of autonomous formation flight control of UAVs. A few developed control methods will be briefly discussed. During the presentation the simulation results and in-flight tests outcomes, as well as constructed UAV airframes and its mathematics models, used autopilots, developed wireless communication links to shared data between UAVs, will be shown in details.
The second part will focus on magnetic launcher for UAVs. The launcher concept, finite element method calculations and engineering works will be presented. Moreover, the results of laboratory and field trials will be described and discussed. In the last part of the presentation the future works will be shortly mentioned.
The speech will be preceded by a short presentation of Bialystok University of Technology and Automatic Control and Robotics Department with the emphasis on past and present most important robotics research projects.
