Abstract:

The fusion of cell biology with nano- and material sciences opens up numerous, yet unexplored possibilities, as for example to be able to control and program stem cells to differentiate into specific phenotypes, relevant for cell replacement therapies. The aim of the European project EXCELL (Exploring Cellular Dynamics at Nanoscale) is the development of an integrated biologically inspired technological platform for monitoring interaction between cells and nanostructured devices. Toward this end an important aspect we must deal with is the accurate temperature control of cell environment. Unfortunately typical bulky commercial laboratory instrumentations for temperature control are not easily implemented in the EXCELL platform and are not able to guarantee high precision electrical measurements due to the wide spread of Electro Magnetic Interferences (EMI). The purpose of this work is the design and first prototypation using commercial off the shelf components of an ad-hoc low-noise temperature controlled system for biological applications.
