Abstract:

Digital processors for radiation measurements have become of extreme importance for the realization of performing detection systems. The need for testing different types of post-processing architectures and algorithms, also without the presence of the detecting apparatus, has highlighted the importance to develop a digital emulator for radioactive sources and detectors. In order to exactly reproduce experimental conditions, a complete emulator has to include both signal and noise generators. For this reason, in this research work a noise emulator has been developed and implemented through an FPGA system. The noise emulator has to allow the possibility to add to the detection signal both the detector noise, mainly thermal and shot, and the electronics one, also flicker. Consequently, it's necessary to emulate both "white" and "flicker" noise without limiting or impairing the performances of the complete system.
