Lorenzo Luini was born in Italy, in 1979. He received the Laurea Degree (cum laude) in Telecommunication Engineering in 2004 and the Ph.D. degree in Information Technology in 2009 (cum laude) both from Politecnico di Milano, Milan, Italy. He is currently an assistant professor at DEI (Dipartimento di Elettronica e Informazione). Since 2004, his research activities have been relative to radiowave propagation through the atmosphere (operating frequency approximately from 1 GHz to 100 GHz), with specific focus on rain field modeling for propagation applications: prediction of the attenuation experienced by Earth-satellite and/or terrestrial radio communication links, simulation and performance evaluation of Fade Mitigation Techniques (e.g. site and time diversity schemes), assessment of the radio interference due to hydrometeor scattering for systems operating at the same frequency, simulation of the availability of extended terrestrial radiowave communication networks. He has been involved in the COST 280 European project ("Propagation Impairment Mitigation for Millimetre Wave Radio Systems") and in the European Network of Excellence (SatNEx), as well as in several projects commissioned to the research group by the European Space Agency (ESA). For a short period, Lorenzo Luini also worked as a System Engineer in the Industrial Unit – Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) Department – at Thales Alenia Space Italia S.p.A.
